RESUMEN

Hematocrit (Hct) is a powerful tool often used in a clinical setting for the diagnosis of blood conditions such as anemia. It is also used in the research field as a hematological parameter in both human and mouse models. Measuring Hct, however, involves the use of expensive standardized equipment (such as a CritSpin™ Microhematocrit Centrifuge). Here, we describe a novel, simple, and affordable method to determine the Hct in untreated wild-type (WT) mice and phenylhydrazine (PHZ)-induced anemic mice with reasonable accuracy, using a benchtop centrifuge commonly available in laboratories. Hct of murine samples processed with a benchtop centrifuge, when compared to the standardized method CritSpin™, showed comparable results. This approach for determining Hct of murine can prove useful to research laboratories that cannot afford specialized equipment for Hct studies. © 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC. Iron deficiency (IDA) and chronic disease (ACD) anemia are complications of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). Therapeutic modalities in remission and active IBD depend on the type of anemia. This study evaluated the link between hepcidin-25, proinflammatory cytokines, and platelet activation markers as biomarkers of anemia and inflammation in active IBD and remission. This prospective observational study included 62 patients with IBD (49 with ulcerative colitis and 13 with Crohn's) and anemia. Patients were divided into Group I (no or minimal endoscopic signs of disease activity and IDA), Group II (moderate and major endoscopic signs of disease activity and mild ACD), and Control group (10 patients with IBD in remission, without anemia). We assessed the difference among groups in the levels of CRP, hemoglobin (Hgb), serum iron, ferritin, hepcidin-25, interleukins, TNF-α, IFN-γ, soluble CD40 ligand, and sP-selectin. Hepcidin-25 levels were significantly higher in Group II versus Group I (11.93 vs. 4.48 ng/mL, p < 0.001). Ferritin and CRP values showed similar patterns in IBD patients: significantly higher levels were observed in Group II (47.5 ng/mL and 13.68 mg/L) than in Group I (11.0 ng/mL and 3.39 mg/L) (p < 0.001). In Group II, hepcidin-25 was positively correlated with ferritin (ρ = 0.725, p < 0.001) and CRP (ρ = 0.502, p = 0.003). Ferritin was an independent variable influencing hepcidin-25 concentration in IBD patients, regardless of disease activity and severity of anemia. IBD hepcidin-25 best correlates with ferritin, and both parameters reflected inflammation extent and IBD activity.

Childhood anaemia is a public health problem in Ethiopia. Machine learning (ML) is a growing in medicine field to predict diseases. Diagnosis of childhood anaemia is resource intensive. The aim of this study is to apply machine learning (ML) algorithm to predict childhood anaemia using socio-demographic, economic, and maternal and child related variables. The study used data from 2016 Ethiopian demographic health survey (EDHS). We used Python software version 3.11 to apply and test ML algorithms through logistic regression, Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree, and K-Nearest Neighbours (KNN). We evaluated the performance of each of the ML algorithms using discrimination and calibration parameters. The predictive performance of the algorithms was between 60% and 66%. The logistic regression model was the best predictive model of ML with accuracy (66%), sensitivity (82%), specificity (42%), and AUC (69%), followed by RF with accuracy (64%), sensitivity (79%), specificity (42%), and AUC (63%). The logistic regression and the RF models of ML showed poorest family, child age category between 6 and 23 months, uneducated mother, unemployed mother, and stunting as high importance predictors of childhood anaemia. Applying logistic regression and RF models of ML can detect combinations of predictors of childhood anaemia that can be used in primary health care professionals.

An estimated 52% of non-pregnant women of reproductive age in India are estimated to be affected by anaemia, which is categorised as a chronic condition. In 2019-2021, the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) which was undertaken revealed the following statistics about the prevalence of anaemia in the state of Karnataka. To estimate haemoglobin levels using non-invasive portable device among nursing students. A cross sectional study was done among students of Nursing college in central Karnataka for a period of 3 months. Total of 140 students were included in the study. EzeCheck haemoglobin estimation was done twice and was recorded in the same Google form. The frequency and percentage of variation of results between Haematology Analyzer and EzeCheck devices was presented with a range of difference such as 0, less than 1, 1.0 to 1.9, 2.0 to 2.9, 3.0 to 3.9, and 4.0 and above. The total prevalence of anaemia among nursing students was 57.8% and most of the students had moderate degree of anaemia (28.6%). Two readings of haemoglobin were taken and difference of readings were calculated and majority of the students had difference of < 0.5 gm/dl (61.4%) and only 1.4% of the students had difference of > 2 gm/dl. The mean difference of haemoglobin of two readings was 0.5 ± 0.5 gm/dl. The technology employed in this study bridges the gap between patients and anaemia diagnosis by providing screening services. The device provides the diagnosis via a non-invasive, IoT-enabled service at a low cost.

BACKGROUND: Population of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is burdened by various extraintestinal manifestations which substantially contribute to greater morbidity and mortality. Growth-differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) is often over-expressed under stress conditions, such as inflammation, malignancies, heart failure, myocardial ischemia, and many others. AIM: To explore the association between GDF-15 and IBD as serum concentrations of GDF-15 were shown to be an independent predictor of poor outcomes in multiple diseases. An additional aim was to determine possible associations between GDF-15 and multiple clinical, anthropometric and laboratory parameters in patients with IBD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 90 adult patients diagnosed with IBD, encompassing both Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), and 67 healthy age- and sex-matched controls. All patients underwent an extensive workup, including colonoscopy with subsequent histopathological analysis. Disease activity was assessed by two independent gastroenterology consultants specialized in IBD, employing well-established clinical and endoscopic scoring systems. GDF-15 serum concentrations were determined following an overnight fasting, using electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. RESULTS: In patients with IBD, serum GDF-15 concentrations were significantly higher in comparison to the healthy controls [800 (512-1154) pg/mL vs 412 (407-424) pg/mL, P < 0.001], whereas no difference in GDF-15 was found between patients with CD and UC [807 (554-1451) pg/mL vs 790 (509-956) pg/mL, P = 0.324]. Moreover, multiple linear regression analysis showed that GDF-15 levels predict CD and UC severity independent of age, sex, and C-reactive protein levels (P = 0.016 and P = 0.049, respectively). Finally, an association between GDF-15 and indices of anemia was established. Specifically, negative correlations were found between GDF-15 and serum iron levels (r = -0.248, P = 0.021), as well as GDF-15 and hemoglobin (r = -0.351, P = 0.021). Accordingly, in comparison to IBD patients with normal hemoglobin levels, GDF-15 serum levels were higher in patients with anemia (1256 (502-2100) pg/mL vs 444 (412-795) pg/mL, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: For the first time, we demonstrated that serum concentrations of GDF-15 are elevated in patients with IBD in comparison to healthy controls, and the results imply that GDF-15 might be involved in IBD pathophysiology. Yet, it remains elusive whether GDF-15 could serve as a prognostic indicator in these patients.

In developing countries, one-quarter of young women have suffered from anemia. However, the available studies in Ethiopia have been usually used the traditional stastical methods. Therefore, this study aimed to employ multiple machine learning algorithms to identify the most effective model for the prediction of anemia among youth girls in Ethiopia. A total of 5642 weighted samples of young girls from the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey dataset were utilized. The data underwent preprocessing, with 80% of the observations used for training the model and 20% for testing. Eight machine learning algorithms were employed to build and compare models. The model performance was assessed using evaluation metrics in Python software. Various data balancing techniques were applied, and the Boruta algorithm was used to select the most relevant features. Besides, association rule mining was conducted using the Apriori algorithm in R software. The random forest classifier with an AUC value of 82% outperformed in predicting anemia among all the tested classifiers. Region, poor wealth index, no formal education, unimproved toilet facility, rural residence, not used contraceptive method, religion, age, no media exposure, occupation, and having more than 5 family size were the top attributes to predict anemia. Association rule mining was identified the top seven best rules that most frequently associated with anemia. The random forest classifier is the best for predicting anemia. Therefore, making it potentially valuable as decision-support tools for the relevant stakeholders and giving emphasis for the identified predictors could be an important intervention to halt anemia among youth girls.

BACKGROUND: The goal was to develop a risk assessment model for predicting red blood cell (RBC) transfusion in neonatal patients to assist hospital blood supply departments in providing small portions of RBCs to those requiring RBC transfusion on time. METHODS: Clinical information was collected from 1,201 children admitted to the neonatal unit. Clinical factors associated with predicting RBC transfusion were screened, and prediction models were developed using stepwise and multifactorial logistic regression analyses, followed by the evaluation of prediction models using receiver operating characteristic curves, calibration curves, and decision curve analysis (DCA). RESULTS: Overall, 81 neonatal patients were transfused with RBCs, and the variables of gestational age at birth, age < 1 month, receipt of mechanical ventilation, and infant anemia were included in the final prediction model. The area under the curve of the prediction model was 0.936 (0.921 - 0.949), which was significantly higher than that of the individual indicators of gestational age at birth, age at admission < 1 month, receipt of mechanical ventilation, and infant anemia (p < 0.001). DCA showed a standardized net benefit for the possible risk of infant RBC transfusion at 0.1 - 1.0. CONCLUSIONS: We developed a risk assessment model to predict the risk of RBC transfusion in neonatal patients that can effectively assess the risk of RBC transfusion in children.

La anemia perioperatoria constituye un factor independiente de riesgo de morbimortalidad posoperatoria. Sin embargo, persisten barreras conceptuales, logísticas y administrativas que dificultan la implementación generalizada de protocolos para su manejo. El coordinador del proyecto convocó a un grupo multidisciplinar de ocho profesionales para elaborar un documento de consenso sobre el manejo de la anemia perioperatoria, con base a en serie puntos claves (PCs) relativos a su prevalencia, consecuencias, diagnóstico y tratamiento. Estos PCs fueron evaluados utilizando una escala Likert de 5 puntos, desde «totalmente en desacuerdo [1]» a «totalmente de acuerdo [5]». Cada PC se consideró consensuado si recibía una puntuación de 4 o 5 por al menos siete participantes (> 75%). A partir de los 36 PCs consensuados, se construyeron algoritmos diagnóstico-terapéuticos que pueden facilitar la implementación de programas de identificación precoz y manejo adecuado de la anemia perioperatoria, adaptados a las características de las instituciones hospitalarias de nuestro país.(AU)


Perioperative anemia is an independent risk factor for postoperative morbidity and mortality. However, conceptual, logistical and administrative barriers persist that hinder the widespread implementation of protocols for their management. The project coordinator convened a multidisciplinary group of 9 experienced professionals to develop perioperative anemia management algorithms, based on a series of key points (KPs) related to its prevalence, consequences, diagnosis and treatment. These KPs were assessed using a 5-point Likert scale, from “strongly disagree [1]” to “strongly agree [5]”. For each KP, consensus was reached when receiving a score of 4 or 5 from at least 7 participants (>75%). Based on the 36 KPs agreed upon, diagnostic-therapeutic algorithms were developed that we believe can facilitate the implementation of programs for early identification and adequate management of perioperative anemia, adapted to the characteristics of the different institutions in our country.(AU)

Background: Anemia in children is common and finding the underlying cause is often uncomplicated. However, in some cases, the underlying diagnosis is rare and difficult to diagnose. Case presentation: A toddler presented with severe anemia with normal red cell indices and a low reticulocyte count. The remaining hematological parameters were normal, bar a slight thrombocytosis. At this point a diagnosis of transient erythroblastopenia of childhood (TEC) was made. The child continued to have slight anemia with intermittent macrocytosis and reticulocytopenia throughout childhood. Growth and development was normal, and there were no signs of congenital abnormalities in the heart or kidneys nor any craniofacial or phalangeal defects. Repeated bone marrow examinations showed no significant abnormal findings. As a teenager the patient was diagnosed with Diamond-Blackfan anemia through an exome-based gene panel which revealed a mutation in the RPL11 gene. Interpretation: Congenital bone marrow failure syndromes do not always present in the classical way, leading to a delayed diagnosis. The increasing availability of different gene panels for patients with persistent abnormal hematological laboratory parameters offers the possibility of a more accurate diagnostic pathway, which is important for adequate follow-up and genetic counselling.

BACKGROUND: Detection of anaemia is crucial for clinical medicine and public health. Current WHO anaemia definitions are based on statistical thresholds (fifth centiles) set more than 50 years ago. We sought to establish evidence for the statistical haemoglobin thresholds for anaemia that can be applied globally and inform WHO and clinical guidelines. METHODS: In this analysis we identified international data sources from populations in the USA, England, Australia, China, the Netherlands, Canada, Ecuador, and Bangladesh with sufficient clinical and laboratory information collected between 1998 and 2020 to obtain a healthy reference sample. Individuals with clinical or biochemical evidence of a condition that could reduce haemoglobin concentrations were excluded. We estimated haemoglobin thresholds (ie, 5th centiles) for children aged 6-23 months, 24-59 months, 5-11 years, and 12-17 years, and adults aged 18-65 years (including during pregnancy) for individual datasets and pooled across data sources. We also collated findings from three large-scale genetic studies to summarise genetic variants affecting haemoglobin concentrations in different ancestral populations. FINDINGS: We identified eight data sources comprising 18 individual datasets that were eligible for inclusion in the analysis. In pooled analyses, the haemoglobin fifth centile was 104·4 g/L (90% CI 103·5-105·3) in 924 children aged 6-23 months, 110·2 g/L (109·5-110·9) in 1874 children aged 24-59 months, and 114·4 g/L (113·6-115·2) in 1839 children aged 5-11 years. Values diverged by sex in adolescents and adults. In pooled analyses, the fifth centile was 122·2 g/L (90% CI 121·3-123·1) in 1741 female adolescents aged 12-17 years and 128·2 g/L (126·4-130·0) in 1103 male adolescents aged 12-17 years. In pooled analyses of adults aged 18-65 years, the fifth centile was 119·7 g/L (90% CI 119·1-120·3) in 3640 non-pregnant females and 134·9 g/L (134·2-135·6) in 2377 males. Fifth centiles in pregnancy were 110·3 g/L (90% CI 109·5-111·0) in the first trimester (n=772) and 105·9 g/L (104·0-107·7) in the second trimester (n=111), with insufficient data for analysis in the third trimester. There were insufficient data for adults older than 65 years. We did not identify ancestry-specific high prevalence of non-clinically relevant genetic variants that influence haemoglobin concentrations. INTERPRETATION: Our results enable global harmonisation of clinical and public health haemoglobin thresholds for diagnosis of anaemia. Haemoglobin thresholds are similar between sexes until adolescence, after which males have higher thresholds than females. We did not find any evidence that thresholds should differ between people of differering ancestries. FUNDING: World Health Organization and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Anemia is a common problem in pediatrics. The most frequent cause is iron deficiency, but it can also be associated to a constitutional or acquired pathology of the bone marrow or red blood cells. We describe a practical approach for rapidly guiding the diagnosis and management of anemia in children. It is based on the history and clinical examination, mean corpuscular volume, ferritinemia, reticulocytosis and hemolytic profile.


L'anémie est un problème commun en pédiatrie. Sa cause la plus fréquente est la carence en fer mais elle peut aussi être liée à une pathologie constitutionnelle ou acquise de la moelle osseuse ou du globule rouge. Nous décrivons une approche pratique pour orienter rapidement la démarche diagnostique et la prise en charge de l'anémie chez l'enfant. Elle se base sur l'histoire personnelle et l'examen clinique, le volume globulaire moyen, le dosage de la ferritinémie, la réticulocytose et le profil hémolytique.

BACKGROUND: Middle uremic toxins (MUTs) can cause anemia and erythropoietin hyporesponsiveness. Theranova dialyzers may improve anemia management by removing MUTs. Hence, the impact of Theranova dialyzers on erythropoietin responsiveness was studied. METHODS: This exploratory single-center prospective observational study, encompassing 50 patients undergoing dialysis with either the Theranova-400 or FX80 membrane for 6 months, involved monthly tracking of hemoglobin levels, weight-adjusted erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (w-ESA) dosing, and erythropoietin resistance index (ERI), with ESA treatment decisions guided by a proprietary algorithm. RESULTS: The groups were similar in terms of demographics and baseline laboratory test results. The median hemoglobin levels, w-ESA and ERI, were found to be similar between FX80 and Theranova-400 groups at both baseline (11.06 vs 10.57, p = 0.808; 92.3 vs 105.2, p = 0.838; 8.1 vs 10.48, p = 0.876) and the end of the study (11.43 vs 11.03, p = 0.076; 48.7 vs 71.5; 4.48 vs 6.41, p = 0.310), respectively. There was a trend toward lower w-ESA and ERI at the end of the study compared to baseline in both groups, but the difference was non-significant. CONCLUSIONS: Based on this study of 50 patients undergoing high-flux dialysis with near-target hemoglobin levels, switching to Theranova 400 dialyzers compared to FX80 dialyzers did not show statistically significant differences in maintaining hemoglobin levels, reducing ESA dose, or lowering ERI. The non-randomized design and small sample size limit the study's power to detect true differences. Larger, randomized trials are needed to confirm findings and definitively assess Theranova 400's benefits.

BACKGROUND: NCCN Guidelines for Hematopoietic Growth Factors recommend evaluation and treatment of anemia in patients with cancer. However, a paucity of data exists regarding compliance with these recommendations. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed of patients diagnosed with any solid tumor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center from 2008 to 2017. Tumor registry-confirmed cancer cases were identified by ICD-O codes using the Synthetic Derivative database. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin (Hgb) level ≤11 g/dL and graded according to CTCAE version 5.0. Absolute, functional, and possible functional iron deficiency were defined based on NCCN Guidelines. RESULTS: A total of 25,018 patients met inclusion criteria. Median age was 60 years. The most common malignancies were respiratory tract, prostate, and nonprostate urologic (11% each). Among 8,695 patients with Hgb levels available prior to diagnosis, 1,484 (17%) were noted to be anemic proximal to diagnosis. Of the 25,018 patients, 11,019 (44%) were anemic within 6 months of diagnosis. Of these patients, 4,686 (43%) had grade 2 (moderate) anemia and 9,623 (87%) had normocytic anemia. Patients with retroperitoneal/peritoneal cancers had the highest prevalence of anemia (83/110; 75%). A total of 4,125 (37%) underwent any evaluation of their anemia, of whom 1,742 (16%) had iron studies performed and 1,528 (14%) had vitamin B12 or folate studies performed. Fewer than half of patients with anemia received treatment (n=4,318; 39%), including blood transfusion (n=3,528; 32%), oral iron supplementation (n=1,279; 12%), or intravenous iron supplementation (n=97; 1%). Anemia treatment was significantly more frequent as the grade of anemia increased (any treatment among grade 1/mild: 12%; grade 2/moderate: 31%; grade 3/severe: 77%; χ2 [2, n=11,019]=3,020.6; P<.001). Patients with penile and testicular cancers had the highest prevalence of anemia evaluation (n=57; 79%). CONCLUSIONS: Anemia is common in patients with solid tumors; yet, compliance with NCCN Guidelines for evaluation and treatment of anemia remains low. There are opportunities to improve compliance with guidelines across the spectrum of cancer care.

Background: Cancer-related anemia (CRA) is a functional iron deficient anemia, and the early diagnosis will improve the prognosis of the patients. This prospective study aimed to investigate the utility of mean reticulocyte volume (MRV) in the early diagnosis of CRA. Methods: A total of 284 first-diagnosed cancer patients were enrolled, and the subjects were assigned anemia and non-anemia groups by hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations. The mature RBC and reticulocyte indices were detected with BC-7500 blood analyzer, and the MRV, reticulocyte hemoglobin (RHE) content, and reticulocyte production index (RPI) were obtained. ROC curves were constructed in identifying anemia diagnosed by the combination of RHE and RPI. An adjusted multivariate analyse and quartiles were used to assess the associations of MRV with early CRA diagnosed by combining RBC indices (MCV, MCH and MCHC), respectively. Results: No statistical differences were observed in MCV, RHE and MRV levels between anemia and non-anemia subjects (p > 0.05). MRV exhibited a complete or high correlation with the RHE levels (r = 1.000, p < 0.001), or MCV, MCH, and MCHC in anemia patients (R: 0.575-0.820, p < 0.001). ROC curves analyse indicated a highest area under curve of 0.829 (95% CI [0.762-0.895]) and 0.884 (95% CI [0.831-0.936]) for MRV in identifying anemia in male and female patients, respectively (p < 0.001). When the optimal cutoff values of MRV were set at 100.95 fl in males and 98.35 fl in females, the sensitivity and specificity were 1.00 and 0.68, and 1.00 and 0.73, respectively. The regression analyse showed that, when being as a categorical variable, MRV showed an odds ratio of 19.111 (95% CI [6.985-52.288]; p < 0.001) for the incidence of CRA. The incidence of overall anemia demonstrated a more significant decrease trend along with the increase of MRV quartiles (p-trend < 0.001). Conclusion: This study revealed that the MRV can be used as a convenient and sensitive index in early diagnosis of cancer-related anemia, and decreased MRV level may be the powerful predictor of overt anemia in cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Women of reproductive age (WRA) in developing countries are often at risk of micronutrient deficiencies due to inadequate intakes and excessive losses. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this trial is to assess the effectiveness of United Nations International Multiple Micronutrient Antenatal Preparation-Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (UNIMMAP-MMS) versus iron-folic acid (IFA) among WRA in reducing anemia. METHODS: Three parallel groups of WRA will participate in a community-based, individually randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled superiority trial. After consent, the sample of 375 mildly or moderately anemic women based on hemoglobin by Hemocue will be randomly assigned across two interventions and one control arm. Trial participants in intervention arms will receive UNIMMAP-MMS or IFA while those in the control arm will receive placebos twice a week for 17 weeks. The primary outcome will be a change in mean hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations. Outcome assessors and study participants will be blinded to the type of supplements and study arm. DISCUSSION: The World Health Organization (WHO) added UNIMMAP-MMS to its essential medicine lists in 2021 but recommended rigorous study. Several factors in addition to inadequate intakes of iron and folic acid contribute to the high prevalence of anemia among WRA in the Somali region. The findings of this study will provide evidence on the effect of UNIMMAP-MMS and IFA on Hb concentrations and anemia prevalence among anemic WRA. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05682261. Anemia and acute heart failure (AHF) frequently coexist. Several published studies have investigated the association of anemia with all-cause mortality and all-cause heart failure events in AHF patients, but their findings remain controversial. This study is intended to evaluate the relationship between anemia and AHF. We systematically searched PubMed, Medline, the Cochrane Library, Embase, and Elsevier's ScienceDirect databases until July 30, 2023, and selected prospective or retrospective cohort studies to evaluate anemia for AHF. A total of nine trials involving 29 587 AHF patients were eventually included. Pooled analyses demonstrated anemia is associated with a higher risk of all-cause heart failure event rate (OR: 1.82, 95% CI: 1.58-2.10, p < .01) and all-cause mortality, both for short-term (30 days) all-cause mortality (OR: 1.91, 95% CI: 1.31-2.79, p < .01) and long-term (1 year) all-cause mortality (OR: 1.72, 95% CI: 1.27-2.32, p < .01). The evidence from this meta-analysis suggested that anemia may be an independent risk factor for all-cause mortality and all-cause heart failure events in patients with AHF and might emphasize the importance of anemia correction before discharge.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a common complication of total hip arthroplasty (THA). In this study, we evaluated the preoperative risk factors for postoperative anemia after THA and developed a nomogram model based on related preoperative and intraoperative factors. METHODS: From January 2020 to May 2023, 927 THA patients at the same medical center were randomly assigned to either the training or validation cohort. The correlation between preoperative and intraoperative risk factors and postoperative anemia after THA was evaluated using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. A nomogram was developed using these predictive variables. The effectiveness and validation for the clinical application of this nomogram were evaluated using the concordance index (C-index), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA). RESULTS: Through univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis, 7 independent predictive factors were identified in the training cohort: Lower body mass index (BMI), extended operation time, greater intraoperative bleeding, lower preoperative hemoglobin level, abnormally high preoperative serum amyloid A (SAA) level, history of cerebrovascular disease, and history of osteoporosis. The C-index of the model was 0.871, while the AUC indices for the training and validation cohorts were 84.4% and 87.1%, respectively. In addition, the calibration curves of both cohorts showed excellent consistency between the observed and predicted probabilities. The DCA curves of the training and validation cohorts were high, indicating the high clinical applicability of the model. CONCLUSIONS: Lower BMI, extended operation time, increased intraoperative bleeding, reduced preoperative hemoglobin level, elevated preoperative SAA level, history of cerebrovascular disease, and history of osteoporosis were seven independent preoperative risk factors associated with postoperative anemia after THA. The nomogram developed could aid in predicting postoperative anemia, facilitating advanced preparation, and enhancing blood management. Furthermore, the nomogram could assist clinicians in identifying patients most at risk for postoperative anemia.
